New Homes Environmental Metrics

Published on 1 October 2025

The New Homes Environmental Metrics provide a consistent set of environmental measures for the home building sector, establishing a common language to describe sustainability performance.

The metrics represent a significant step forward towards the standardisation of green accounting methods for the sector. They will help enable targeted progress across key sustainability topics and set a shared standard for progress on environmental data quality.

These metrics provide a clear, consistent way to measure and report on sustainability across five ready-to-use core metrics covering carbon, energy, water, nature and waste. A further eighteen extended metrics are being built.

Supported by Homes England, key financial institutions, Next Generation, Sustainability Reporting Standard for Social Housing and B4NZ Sustainability Data Taskforce, this is the first time the sector has come together around a common set of methodologies and New Homes Environmental Metrics.
