BNG Good Practice Guidance

Published on 25 June 2025

The Future Homes Hub has created a Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Good Practice Guide, a vital new resource designed to cut through the noise and provide clear, actionable steps for the homebuilding sector.

This guidance is to support the design, construction, and management of on-site mandatory BNG in England. It consolidates existing resources and offers additional insights into what constitutes good practice for BNG in ways that add value for development projects.

The interactive tool illustrates key actions throughout the planning process, and presents perspectives of developers, local planners, ecologists and other key stakeholders in an accessible and relatable manner. It also reflects the collaborative ethos underpinning successful BNG implementation.

Structured on the Future Homes Hub BNG planning process flow diagram, the guidance introduces characters to provide a practical, scenario-based understanding of good practice at each stage of the process.

This resource is for anyone involved in supporting the delivery of on-site BNG, whether as part of their professional responsibilities or in the development of internal best practice procedures for their organisation. It is designed to be universally applicable, regardless of site size, and focuses exclusively on the Statutory Biodiversity Metric.

The guidance has been co-developed by a multidisciplinary working group representing the range of expertise typically required within a BNG project team.
